On 15 June 2023 Alstom invited MITMA Minister Raquel Sánchez and Renfe President Raül Blanco to the factory in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, to receive the latest details and images of the 201 Coradia Stream EMUs currently under construction for the Cercanías network in Madrid and the Rodalies network in Barcelona, together with various other Cercanías hubs.
The new EMUs will have four single deck and two double deck cars, with a capacity of 900 passengers. Each six-car formation will have six pairs of double-leaf entrance doors. They will be 100 % barrier-free, with ample multi-purpose spaces. They will also be equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostics systems, gathering thousands of pieces of data every second, thus enabling a high level of fleet availability, through the use of preventive maintenance strategies.
The first three trains of the batch of 201 are currently under construction, with testing and authorisation scheduled for 2024. Once this has been completed, it is planned to start batch production of the remaining 198, at a hand-over rate of three or four new trains per month. At 1.8 billion EUR, this is the largest single order for new trains ever placed in Spain, and includes maintenance and spare parts for 56 of the EMUs for 15 years.
