On 6 April 2022, Alstom has signed a historic agreement with SJ to supply 25 Zefiro Express high-speed trains, worth around 650 million EUR, with an option for 15 more. They will be Sweden’s fastest ever units, capable of operating at maximum speed of 250 km/h. The first train is scheduled for delivery in 2026.
These six-car Zefiro Express EMUs are designed to operate in harsh weather conditions (for temperatures as low as -40 °C) and will have 363 seats in total, ergonomically designed for maximum comfort. The train width, electrical and signalling systems have been developed with an understanding that the trains will run in both Sweden and Denmark, but they will also be certified for traffic in Norway.
The Zefiro Express is part of Alstom’s high and very high-speed train Avelia platform, covering maximum operating speeds of between 200 and 350 km/h.
We asked Alstom for the main technical data (axle arrangements, voltage, traction power, brake power, dimensions, weights, etc.), and where the new Zefiros will be built (again with Chinese production of bodyshells, at BST Qingdao works, like with the Zefiro Express X80 EMU for Västtrafik)? We are waiting for an answer.
