CAF secured two new agreements to expand the number of units in its current projects: it will supply the Dutch operator GVB with 13 additional trains for the Amsterdam metro, and it will increase the number of units for the new Palermo city tram network. The combined value of both contracts amounts to approximately 130 million EUR.
Amsterdam Metro
GVB, the public transit operator serving the Amsterdam region, has entered into an agreement with CAF for the supply of an additional 13 Type M7 metro units. This option was included in the contract entered into with CAF in 2018, which initially envisaged the supply of 30 trains. The new three-car sets will be identical to these that have already been delivered, and can be coupled to form the six-car trains. They will also be equipped with the CBTC, and capable of fully unattended train operation (GoA 4).
They will replace the oldest units in the metro fleet, which CAF also originally supplied in the 1990s and are now at the end of their service life. This latest order brings the total number of CAF-built rail vehicles acquired by Dutch customers over the last ten years to 445 units, comprising both delivered vehicles and those currently held in the order book.
Palermo trams
A year after entering into the initial contract, the Comune di Palermo has chosen to extend the agreement, purchasing 14 more trams. They are destined for the new sections D, E2, F and G of the tram network, the construction of which will soon be put out to tender.
It should be noted that halfway through last year, the joint venture between the Italian construction company Sis Scpa and CAF won the contract to construct the new tram lines A, B and C in Palermo and to supply the vehicles for these lines. The scope of the part of the contract that corresponded to CAF consisted of the design and manufacture of nine trams to operate on the above-mentioned sections of the city's network, with an option to increase this supply by up to 35 additional trams.
