After the official presentation to the press of the TRAMLINK on 19 February 2025, Azienda Transporti Milanesi (ATM) has started regular service on Lines 7 and 31. Stadler supplies 74 trams that are replacing older vehicles over the next two years.

In September 2020, Stadler and ATM signed a framework agreement for the supply of 80 three-car medium-capacity TRAMLINKs with a length of 25,400 mm and three doors on each side, for both urban and intercity services. At the same time, an application agreement was signed for the supply of an initial batch of 30 units, which was followed by a second application agreement for the supply of a further 30 identical TRAMLINKs.

In 2023, the two companies signed a second framework agreement comprising up to 25 medium-capacity and up to 25 high-capacity TRAMLINKs. In a first phase, ATM has ordered 14 high-capacity trams with a length of 35,000 mm and four doors on each side.

Principal technical data:
Track gauge 1,445 mm
Supply voltage 600 V DC
Traction motor power 4 x 105 kW
Max. speed 60 km/h
Vehicle width 2,400 mm
Vehicle height 3,685 mm above TOR
Entry height 350 mm above TOR
Wheel diameter 610 mm (when new)
Min. curve radius negotiable 17 m

These three-car TRAMLINKs are characterised by the iconic Milan yellow livery. They are the first bi-directional trams of ATM and have an attractive open interior provided with 66 vandal-resistant seats and specific areas for wheelchair users. The barrier-free low floor interior and three doors per side allow easy boarding and alighting. In addition, the doors are equipped with ramps to facilitate the access of people with reduced mobility. Particular attention has been paid to the safety of passengers, drivers, and pedestrians. Large windows in the front allow an extra-wide field of vision for the driver. No blind spot cameras guarantee the security throughout the whole vehicle.

Arrigo Giana, CEO of ATM, said: “It is an investment that confirms Milan as the tram capital of Italy, which today has a tram network of almost 160 km and 17 lines. The new vehicles represent the future, but they will continue to stand alongside the icon of the historic trams among the symbols of Italy in the world”. Start of regular service for the shorter TRAMLINKs was scheduled for 2025, that for the longer TRAMLINKs is announced for 2026.
