On 12 May 2022, Škoda Group was awarded a contract by Västtrafik of Göteborg for the overhaul and repair of 80 Type M31 trams. The work will take place at the Škoda Ekova facility in Ostrava between 2022 and 2027.
The contract is worth around 78 million EUR and follows an earlier order realised from 2011 to 2017, when then Ekova Electric carried out repairs on 79 Type M31 trams, then mainly involving revisions of their cars and replacement of electrical equipment. Between 2017 and 2021, the company repaired mechanical parts on 65 Type M32 trams. In 2021, Ekova Electric was incorporated into the Škoda Group and changed its name to Škoda Ekova.
The new repairs will include a wide range of modifications, such as a new entrance doors, a ramp for wheelchair, a new braking system, or an air-con for the driver's cab. Other tasks will include painting the cars, repairing the laminates, bogies maintenance, refurbishing the electrical system, replacing the floor covers, modifying the interiors and driver's cabs, adding new lighting or revising the heating system.
