Stadtwerke München (SWM) is continuing its modernisation of the MVG metro fleet. On 27 April 2022, SWM and MVG (Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft) took delivery of the first of 22 type C2 metro trains of the third batch (the 2nd option of the frame contract) at SWM’s Fröttmaning depot. There, the train will now be made ready for operation, undergo extensive tests and be approved for passenger service.
The new units with a maximum speed of 80 km/h and a length of 115 m will then work on lines U3 and U6 just like the other C2s already in operation, but it is also planned to use them on other lines.
Together with the delivery of the first train from the second option, SWM awarded Siemens Mobility a contract to deliver further 18 six-car type C2 EMUs. This is the result of a new international tender, which was invited because the second option was also the last option under the framework contract. As a result, a total of 85 C2 trains will be operating on the München metro network in the future.
The new sets will be manufactured at the Siemens Mobility works in Wien and are scheduled for delivery in 2024 and 2025. The bogies will be supplied by the company’s factory in Graz.
