Liebherr supplies batch-built propane-based HVAC for the first time

Liebherr-Transportation Systems was commissioned by Stadler Polska to supply HVAC systems with a special feature: the coolant used is propane (R290), a natural refrigerant, which enables more sustainable cooling.

These HVAC systems will be fitted in 20 four-car FLIRT EMUs ordered by VR in 2022. Liebherr will deliver in total 80 HVACs for passenger saloons, 80 heat recovery units and 40 units for driver‘s cabs. The delivery is scheduled to  take place from mid-September 2024 until the end of 2026.

This order marks a special milestone for Liebherr-Transportation Systems as the company will supply for the first time the batch-built HVACs using propane. Propane has a Global Warming Potential of only 3, which is significantly lower than many synthetic refrigerants.

The technical concept, which considers all relevant safety requirements, was developed in cooperation with TÜV Süd. Propane as a refrigerant offers a natural alternative to conventional, environmentally harmful refrigerants. In addition, the system is easy to service and guarantees rail operators a reliable product solution with minimal down time.
