TfW's First FLIRT In Service

18 January 2023 saw the first of the 71 FLIRTs for Transport for Wales to start the commercial service. It’s operating on the Rhymney line between Rhymney and Penarth in south Wales and is a DMU FLIRT, of which there are 11. Stadler is also supplying 24 regional tri-mode Class 756 FLIRTs and 36 Class 398 CITYLINKs. 

At present, all 11 Class 231s are with TfW. At present it is expected that the whole Class 231 fleet will be in service later this year, TfW has not finalised the exact date yet. With regard to the tri-mode Class 756, the first train is currently undergoing test runs and is based at Cardiff Canton depot.
