On 30 August 2024, Dopravní podnik Ostrava (DPO) took over the last of 38 trams of the Škoda ForCity Smart 39T type; it will be put into operation in the coming days. The Škoda 39Ts are the most modern trams that DPO has in its fleet, they have been running in Ostrava since 2022 and passengers can see them on lines across the city.
The original delivery of 35 vehicles was expanded by three vehicles by contractual option. The DPO has taken them over in recent weeks. The complete price for all trams is over 1.9 billion CZK (around 760,000 EUR). DPO has already received EU subsidies for a total of six vehicles from the Integrated Regional Operational Programme (IROP) in the last programming period. Another ten trams are currently included in three projects aimed at modernising the DPO fleet by acquiring trams to maximise the greening of public transport. These projects are also co-financed by the EU under IROP. The amount of support is to be 85 % of the total eligible expenditure.
Each tram with a maximum speed of 80 km/h has 60 seats and 140 standing places. The length is 26.6 m, the maximum height with the pantograph lowered is 3.6 m, the weight of an empty vehicle is more than 36 t, and up to 56 t when fully occupied. With the gradual deployment of ForCity trams, the T6 type of high-floor trams was completely withdrawn, and the T3 cars were also partially phased out.
