On 17 July 2024, Alstom signed a long awaited contract with ÖBB to upgrade up to 449 vehicles with the ETCS OBUs, order volume of over 100 million EUR. A project duration is scheduled until 2030.
The first fixed call-off comprising 195 vehicles includes railjets and locomotives, which have also the international problems with ETCS. The conversions required for the upgrade to ETCS Baseline 3 (SRS 3.6.0) will take place under the responsibility of Alstom in the ÖBB works in Linz and Wien.
Following our question, ÖBB specified that the framework agreement covers 50Class 1016 locomotives, 282 Class 1116 locomotives, 50 Class 1216 locomotives and 60 Class 8090 driving trailers (railjet). The first call-off includes 85 Class 1116 locomotives, 50 Class 1216 locomotives and 60 Class 8090 driving trailers. All vehicles covered by the contract will be upgraded with ETCS. The execution of the first call-off of the contract will be completed by the end of 2030.
The Class 1216 Tauruses are owend by ÖBB and are included in the first call-off. The driving trailers of the ČD railjets are owned by ČD and will be fitted with on-board ETCS later, also within this ÖBB framework contract.
