The first Class 93 locomotive has been completed at the Stadler València plant and should be shipped to the UK in the next few days or weeks. Rail Operations (UK) has signed a framework agreement with Stadler for the supply of 30 Class 93 tri-mode locomotives, of which an initial batch of ten is scheduled for delivery in early 2023.
It is thus another new variant of the EUROLIGHT family of locomotives from Stadler's portfolio, in this case the first tri-mode locomotive that Stadler has ever designed and built and the first to operate in the United Kingdom - Class 93s will be able to run in electric mode on 25 kV 50 Hz with a maximum power of 4,600 kW. They also feature a 900 kW engine and two Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO) traction battery packs, allowing them to operate on non-electrified lines.
The ROG locomotives are to be used on express freight services, but this type has also been ordered by Grand Union for deployment on open access express services.
