After 46 years of operations, the Class SGM Sprinter EMUs have been withdrawn from commercial operations at NS on 11 December 2021, the last service with the first-generation train taking place between Zwolle and Utrecht and completing a three-year withdrawal process. A farewell tour was to be held, but could not take place due to the COVID-19 situation.
The two-car Sprinter 2133 has been preserved and has become part of the collection of the Nederlands Spoorwegmuseum (NSM), which is based in Utrecht.
Following withdrawal of the Class SGM, the Sprinter services are being operated with Type SLT (Siemens/Bombardier), FLIRT (Stadler Rail) and SNG (Sprinter Nieuwe Generatie, built by CAF) EMUs.
