The State of California and Stadler have signed on 12 October 2023 a contract for delivery of four hydrogen-powered trains for the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) and Caltrans, with an option for up to 25 additional ones. A partnership between Stadler and the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) paved the way for the creation of the very first HMUs in North America. The vehicle was unveiled at two international events: InnoTrans 2022 and APTA EXPO 2023.
Stadler's new FLIRT H2 has undergone extensive testing in both Switzerland and the USA. The successful trials have led to a decision by CalSTA and Caltrans to embark on this innovative path alongside Stadler. The contract represents the next phase in the collaboration, introducing a further developed SBCTA model with enhanced transport capacity.
Martin Ritter, CEO Stadler US says: „Our design of the battery fuel cell train is changing the US rolling stock industry for alternative propulsion systems, combining the typical Stadler top quality and reliability. We're driving innovation that's not just transforming railways, but the very essence of sustainable transportation in America.“
