On 26 February 2025, ONCF (Office National des Chemins de Fer) has awarded CAF a contract to supply 30 intercity ten-car EMUs with a maximum speed of 200 km/h and more than 500 seats. The contract also includes an option for up to 10 units, as well as the possibility of providing technical assistance and spare parts supply services for ONCF. We asked CAF for the main technical data of the trains and the delivery dates. The company answered us: "At this time we can not provide more information."
In the only published illustration, the train's design resembles the Oxygène EMUs for SNCF, which are also ten-car units with a top speed of 200 km/h, but have 420 seats. And the delivery of the first batch is at present around three years late.
This is the first CAF order from Morocco, It is worth almost 600 million EUR, not including options, and will be financed by the Spanish Government's FIEM (Business Internationalisation Fund) funds. ONCF plans to use the trains to serve Morocco's main cities on the Fez - Marrakech and Kenitra - Fez lines.
Morocco is currently pursuing an ambitious plan to modernise its infrastructure, with a particular focus on its rail network in preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2030, which the Kingdom of Morocco is co-hosting with Spain and Portugal. One of ONCF's objectives is to increase the country's rail coverage rate to 87 % of the population by 2040 (currently at 51 %) by connecting more than 40 cities, compared to the 23 cities at present.
