On 22 April 2024 Adif announced that the CAF‘s HEMU prototype had now run 10,000 km using hydrogen while on test. The final test runs were made over the 1,668 mm gauge line between Ourense and Santiago de Compostela.
The train also visited Portugal, crossing the border at Tui, between 3 and 6 April. The test runs were made on the line between Valença do Minho and Nine, clocking up over 8,500 km under hydrogen power. This is the first time that a hydrogen-fuelled train has ever run on the Portugal network. Refuelling facilities were provided by Stellantis of O Porriño, while Iberdrola supplied the fuel, and Medway provided drivers.
